the amberhoney story

So, hi! I’m Katie, I’m 29 years old and live on the beautiful south Devon coast.
Although I studied Zoology at university, I have had a few different jobs since I graduated – such as dog walking and hospitality – but settled on working in retail and eventually have worked my way up into a full-time management role. Although I have always enjoyed my job, I’ve always wanted to start my own business. I have a brain that constantly comes up with ideas, so starting Amberhoney has been a great way to turn some of these many ideas into a reality.
The idea of making handmade homeware under the Amberhoney name actually started about 6 years ago, when I started making and selling bunting at a couple of craft fairs. However, I had no clue what I was doing business-wise and soon stopped in favour of a full-time retail job as I had bills to pay!
Fast forward to the first lockdown in 2020 – I, like most of the UK, was placed on furlough as my place of work had to shut. After completing all the dull chores that I had been putting off for years, I found myself a little bored so started experimenting with making candles, as well as picking up my old hobby of sewing little pieces for my flat, like cushions. I realised I loved being creative and making my own products, and friends and family seemed to like my designs, so I thought I would restart Amberhoney – but with a little more knowledge and research this time!
After spending the summer working my retail job again, it wasn’t until November 2020 that I had done enough research and testing. I built my website and then launched Amberhoney for you all to enjoy! A year on and I still work full time in my other job, but I am still investing all my spare time into Amberhoney and its so amazing to see it slowly growing with everyone’s support and feedback.
If you’ve had a chance to browse the products on my site, I’m sure you’ll notice I am heavily inspired by the gorgeous coast and countryside I am lucky enough to now live in. I like to take colour schemes and natural themes from my surroundings to create pieces which will suit in any home. Sustainability is also a passion of mine, and while I acknowledge I can always improve, I strive to use as little plastic as possible in my products and packaging, and I’m also working towards using ethical materials as much as possible.
My dream is for one day to open an Amberhoney store in South Devon where I currently live, but in the meantime I will continue to run online, so keep an eye on our social media for any new product launches and updates!
